He had a ‘dispute’ with an acquaintance. Then he was shot dead with a rifle, police say

A 36-year-old man who police say was involved in an “ongoing dispute” with another man died on Thursday after being shot with a rifle, Delaware State Police said.

Troopers were called to the 200 block of Reeves Crossing Road near Felton just after 4:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the victim lying in the road with wounds to his upper body.

Paramedics tried to treat the man, but he died on scene. Police will release his name once family has been notified.

Detectives quickly learned that the victim had been arguing with 36-year-old Steven Smith, who lives in Centerville, Maryland.

Police said that Smith drove to Reeves Crossing Road to confront the victim and when he arrived, he began shooting at him with a rifle. After the shooting, Smith returned home.

Deputies with the Queen Anne’s County, Maryland Sheriff’s Office later arrested Smith at his home “without incident,” police said. He will be extradited to Delaware to face first degree murder and weapons charges.
